The transport escaped by superior
speed. although a running battle.
lasting more than an hour,‘took place
in which more than 100 shots were
tired by the two vessels.

The submarine appeared to have a
gun that outranged any carried by
the transport and from this gun there
were counted thirty-five shots, none
of which,.however. hit the Ameri-
can ship. The submarlne did' not
venture close enough to use a tor-
pedo and finally gave up the pursuit.
