the first taken by a state legisla-

show pretty clearly the sentiment of
the country. as that state has as one
of its most important industries the
distilling business.
. Another state, «equally as strongly
intrcnched in the past with the li-
quor interests in Maryland, the leg~
islature of which also ratified the
.‘resollitlon by a decisive vote. In
the senate of Maryland the vote was
18 for and 7 against. fl'he house
adopted thanmendmeut 45 to 33.
; in addition to Kentucky and lary-
land. the legislatures of hllsslssippi,
North Dakota, Montana. South Caro
lina, Texas, and Virginia have rati-
fied the amendment. Not. a single
state legislature has rejected the
amendment, and the attitude of the
'New Yorlt assembly. Anti-Saloon lea-
gue. members says. will tend to in-
fluence wavering members of other
state legislatures to cast their votes

of Pennsylvania, who voted against
'the resolution. now finds himself
swept along by the prohibition tide.
it had been the intention of the Pen-
rose candidates for governor and the
'state legislaturc to go before the peo-
ple opposed to tin amendment. in
the last few days. however. tide re-
publican fiorces have changed 'front
and the chief candidates of that party

Sprout. who will seek the nomination
for governor. will declare for the rat-
itlcatlon of the prohibition amend-

Twenty-sir states are now in the
prohibition column. and it is neces-
