was exceedingly rigorous. although
I was never actually ill-treated. I
was so strictly watched that contrary

I was never even able to attempt to
escape previously.
“During the last eighteen months
the food supplied to pylsoners by the
Germans has fallen to the starvation
point. and like the, rest of my cum.
radon, I could have been unable to live
without the packages from France.
On that score I have nothing to con
plain. I received them all the time
from over the country and from some
persons whom I never heard of. and
was able to feed half the camp. Once,
about six months ago, for some reason
the delivery of packages was tempor-
arily suspended. and we had a terri-
blc time. I lost fifteen pounds ln’two-
weeks.

been feeding up and doing gymnastic
exercise assiduously to be in trim for
escape. So now my weight and health
are practically normal.
“What are my plans? Of course I

pect. You know it is like coming
back from the grave. One has to
learn over again.
"When I was captured. air fighting
.was regarded as extraordinary. (Gan

by him.) and my airplane had only a
ninety horse-power rotary, with a
speed of seventy miles an hour and

they tell me, the fighting airplanes at.

over ten miles an hour.
"You know, since my return I have
theen too busy meeting people and
answering some of :19 thousand let-
ters that arrive daily. even to visit
an aerodrome, much less to fly my-
self. I expect to be in training in a
fortnight. and hope to be back at the
front for the summer campaign.
“I hear that America’s air contribu—
tion is going, to be something remark-
!able. and many persons seem to be
'tending to the opinion that the war
will be finally won in the air. Per-
sonally, I cannot say as yet, but I am
looking forward to another go at the
booties. Remember. I have a big score
against them to pay for the last throt-
.years. .
l "One thing 1 can tell you positive-
ly. Germany is far worse of! than
one here seems to realize. Why, to
the sentries guarding the camp, was
given food that a self-respecting dog
would refuse to eat. They used to
tell us about the food conditions,
which were terrible for the masses,
though it was said in Berlin that one
could buy a decent meal if he was
able to pay a hundred or a‘ hundred
and fifty francs (820 to 830) for it.

a protest against it was ruthlessly
suppressed. and those concerned wore’
