A very interesting meeting of the
tax commission was held in the Fitch
school. last night. About forty East
Siders were present, and the sugges-
tions received by the commission
showed much thought and study.
Judge Joseph it Taylor, chairman
of the committee, opened the meeting
with a short address, in which he said
that the object of holding the session
was to receive complaints, sugget
lions, and neommendations upon the
tax question. \

favor of having taxes paid semi-an
nually, and to have the tax on every

One eyening last August. a young
man entered Joseph Amend's cafe in
Darien and requested the favor of
having a check for $70 cashed, as he
wished to use the money before bank-
ing hours the next day, The check was
signed by Alex. Raymond, whom Mr.
Amend knew to be a large property
owner at Rowayton. Mr. Amend also
knew that the young man was one of
Mr. Raymond‘s employees, so he gave
him $70 and took the check. The
young man disappeared that very
evening. and has not been seen around
Rowayton or Darien, since. in due
course of time. it transpired that Mr.
Raymond claimed that the check had
been raised from 87 to 830 after he
signed it, and refused to pay Mr.
Amend more than 31. So Mr. menu
brought a civil suit before Justlc of
the Peace. Abel Dance, who we not
able to discover any proof that the
check had been tampered with. and de‘
cided the case in favor of Mr. Amend.
