Out of the 7,500 notices sent to Inla-
cellaneous corporations in the state
notifying them to file with the tax
commissioner on or before April 1.
returns showing their net income for
the past year, for the purpose of levy-
ing the state income tax, only 2,300
have made returns to date. A week
remains for the filing of the returns
with the tax commissioner.

In case a corporation fails to make
the return the tax commissioner is
empowered by law to make it from
the best information obtainable. and
to add 50 per cent. to the tax

The number of notices sent out far
exceeds the number of corporations
in the state. This exonao is due to tho
tact that a large number of corpora-
tions which have gone out of business
continue to be listed in the ones of
the secretary of state because they
have not complied with the require-
ments of the legal declaration that
they have ceased to exist. Some of

 

them have died the preliminary no
tice, but not the final certificate of dil-i
soluiion, and that inadequate observ—
ance of what the law requires has
had the effect of keeping the corpora-
tions legally alive when, as a matter

of fact, they have long since ceased
to exist. .

possession without having paid the
federal tax, Leon Jim. a Chlnsman of
Bridgeport. was held for the I'nited
States Circuit court, in New Haven.
yesterday, by Commissioner Wright,
bonds being placed at $1,500. Since
his arrest Jim has been imjail, as he.
has found no bondsman. The next
regular session of the court is in May.
A surety company notified the com-
mlsaioner that it would give bonds for
