BRIDG‘EPORT, Dec. 23.-—When fire
which did several thousand dollars
damage broke out in the workshop of
I the F‘airdeld County Jail on North
avenue. Bridgeport. at 6:30 o'clock
last night, a small panic gripped the
288 inmates whose screams and oaths
of despair could be heard for a con-
» siderahle distance. All of the fire up
paratus from the center of the city
was called and within a half~hour the
firemen had the blaze under control.
The fine was at no time near the pris-
oners who were soon calmed by the
attaches oi the jail, and remained in
their cells.
- The heaviest damage, the extent of
which has not yet been determined,
was in the leather shop conducted by
JL subcontractor under Frank E.
Clark. treasure; of the Bridgeport
Stone company. which has the con-
tract for making the concrete blocks.
