HARTFORD Oct 18.-The crew of

to the police early yesterday that un-
known men had attempted to hold up
the car just after midnight and that
when the motorman, Charles Ward,
put on the power and speeded away,
several shots were fired. There were
no passengers on board at the time.
The conductor. E. H. Hale. said that
the men nearly reached the steps of
the car when he ordered full speed
ahead. No attempt was made to follow
the car. Hale said. The bullets were
said to have come from a .38 calibre
revolver.
