oral assembly It the last session failed
to enact a law to continue the salaries
of the members of the Tuberculosis
commission. When the law, creating
the commission, was enacted In 1903.
~It wan expressly stated that the rates
:of salaries for which it provided
“from July 1 of that year. At the last
session the committee on public health
and safety reported a bill which
would have the effect of reorganizing
the commission “and speclflcally pro-
vided a rats p of salaries for the coul-
mlssion. That bill dld not‘pnss and
nothing further was done to amend the
exlotlng law.
It has been contended that since the
time limit for the salaries, set. by the
act of 1909, was not removed at the last
session there In no provision in the sta-
tutes for the payment of salaries, and
some have {one so for as to say the
commissioners have not been under
salary since July lost. It was suggest-
ed that tbe matter should be referred
to the attorney generalrbut an exam-

amended in regard to the continuance

of the three commissioners for the

Schooner Reports Striking Bottom

The three musted schooner Saran
N. Lee, which arrived in Bridgeport
yesterday from New York, reported
striking some unknown object shortly
after 11 o'clock Tuesday night offhPen-
field roof. The ship suddenly heeled
on lter starboardslde and those of the
crew who were below reck‘dlstinctly
heard the scraping of the boat against
something on-tho bottom of the sound.
The view is expressed to marine cir-
cles that. the reel is egibndlng proba-
bly on account of son frowtb similar
to that encountered near Port Jelfer-
son several years ago. The home object
has been encountered several times
within the past. year and a half accord-
ing to reports of sea captains. Nine
barges went to the bottom 0: the rec:
eight years ago and some are Inclined
to the theory that it is one of these
boats that was struck; Tuesday night.

that. officials of the United States
