An announcement of considerable
local interest was made yesterday
when it became limits that Judge
John Walsh, of this city. judge of the
Common Pleas Court, had been ob-
tained to sit in the city court at Wat-
erbury. on May 15, to hear the famous
libel suit brought by State Senator
Papejeditor‘ of the
publican."
The services of Judge Walsh. who
presided at the criminal sessions of
the court of Common Pleas for Fair-
iield county, were secured by Henry
W. Minor, clerk of the Waterbury _
court, on April 26, the day the case
was first set for trial. On that day,
Mr, Pape was accompanied to court
'by his managing editor, Timothy F.
Barry. as well as his counsel, Lawyer
and Representative Bronson. "here
was a disappointed crowd. mostly law-
yers and newspapermen men, on hand.
Editorials in Mr. Pape's paper had
~ aroused Senator Peasley’s ire to such
an extent that he asked for a warrant
and got it. The opening hearing in the
City Court on April 26 was adjourned
to the larger and more iuiurious
quarters of the district court. Judge
Frank L. Wilder, of the city court 01
Bridgeport, waspresent and took a
seat on the bench. The complaint was
read and Editor Pope was there on
trial.
The reading oi the complaint, dis-
closed the interesting iact that .Mr.
Pope was charged with having written,
printed, publicly exhibited and distrib-
tributed, in a newspaper, “certain o!-
fenslve, indecent and abusive matter
at and concerning one James A. Peas-
ley,“ etc. in one of the editorials
‘ complained of by Mr. Peasley the words
" "sold out his constituents" appear.
while in the same editorial the charge
that he “has traded on his constit-
uents' wishes and interests and his
_ soul to secure a Job" is made. In an.
- other editorial quoted in the complaint
Senator Peasley is referred to as “Sen-
ator Pusley."
The “Republican" had been whack-
ing away at Waterbury's "double-bar-
: reled" City Court ever since the last
General Assembly seslon, oi! and on.
