NEW YORK" April 1.——-An explosion
in the-sawdust blower of a big cigar
box factory at Avenue C and East Sev-
enteenth street, today, set the build-
ing afire and sent neariytwo hundred
men and women employees of the
place down the tire escapes to safety.
Five minutes after the alarm bells in
the factory rang the entire building,
a foursstory and basement structure,
was a mass of flames. Half a dozen
firemen working on the roof were res-

tension ladders.
Nicholas Althnus. owner of the fac-

accounted for. Several of the women
employees fainted during the rush to
