Clover Money Order Forms Passed in
Pittsburgh 'nnd Chicago.—

Warning was received at the post
office, today from *Third Assistant.
Postmaster- General A. M- Dookery
that counterfeit money orders haie
been detected in Pittsburgh and Chi-
cago, instructing the local office to
keep a sharp watch for the worthless
paper. The orders purport to have
been made at the Baltimore office.
No. 55,100 and run upward‘fmm the
serial number 604407.
There is a slight difference in the
size of some of the letters in the text ‘
of the counterfeit orders. and in tlie
figures in the left hand marginal
guard. The M. 0. B. dating stamp
is one-sixteenth of an inch wider
than the government stamp.
Paper is Different.
The ,paper is what is known as
“laid" paper and not the "safety"
paper used by the government. It is
darker, thicker and heavier than the
genuine order. and is not as trans-
parent or as smooth on either side.
There are no watermarks in the
counterfeit paper, which shows verti-
cal and horizontal lines when held
to the light, while there only ver-
tical lines in the government order,
and those appear on its face. An or-
- dinary' eraser used on the govern-
ment orderwili turn the paper white,
while it has no appreciable effect on
on' the color of the counterfeit.
The post office authorities here are
instructed to refuse pay orders sub-
mited on such paper, notify the police
immediately and wire the post-office
inspector for; this district at once if
any of the paper appears. Business
men are baked to keep a. sharp look.
