“German movements of some importance are taking
place this morning in the North Sea.’ Scarborough and
Hartlepool havé'been shelled and our flotilla have at

Scarborugh, which, it is announced, is being shelled by
the Germans today, is a fashionable seaside resor? of Eng-
land, inIthe northern part of Yorkshire, 01) a dicadiand ex-
tending into the North Sca’. It. is thirty sewn miles
northeast of the important English city of York. It is a
little over tuo hundred miles from London.
Scarborough hasbeen popularly styled ”’5’ "Queen of
Watering Places", The town has a large spa, and inter—
esting aquarium a museum and a fine‘drivc and promenade
pier. The permanent populaton of the place is more than
40,000 persons. -
Hartlepool is in the southeast portion of the County of
Durham. It 15 about forty miles northwest of Scarborough
on a promontory that extends into the North Sca. Its
population is about 25.000. Adjoining Hertlepool isIWcsi
l-iartlepool, a cityIlof more tan 65,00 inhabitants.
The Hartlcpools, which are provided with a vast system
of docks,.bef0rc the war had an active trade withihe Baltic
ports, and with H'amburg, Antwerp and Rotterdam. The
chief industries are shipbuilding, iron founding and the
construction of marine engines.
