Surprises
Now that Boston has the National
League pennant tuclmd' securely under
its wing, the ultra-fastidious tandem
of that learned center is placing un-
usual stress upon the chances of the
Braves in the impending unpleasant-
uess with the iordly Athletics, and no
cloud appears on the horizon to dis-
tract from the brilliancy of what they
concede is the sunset of the Mackian
world's series hope. Even the con-
servative Staliings believes the Braves
are invincible—that they have been
winning so consistently that no team
on earth can throw them off their
stride. The Braves themselves are
looking forward to the coming series
with considerable confidence in their'
ability to baffle the potent thrusts oi
the Connimax These hopes sound well
enough from a National League stand-
point, but random in general has too
keen a respect for the ability of the
world's champions to count them out
of the race because the Braves stamp-
eded all the clubs in the Natioaal
League into wild riot., The batting of
the Athletics is bound to figure as
prominently as ever when the gates
of Shlbe Park are officially opened for
the first game of‘the series. Last
year the Giants' batting and base
running were counted upon to subdue
the Macks. But they didn’t. The
Giants” batting was relied upon to
knock the Athletics’ chances gally west:
in 1911. But.it didn't. it was figured
that Mack and his warriors had no
chance against the great Cub machine
in 1910. But they did. This year the
Braves' admirers firmly believe that
pitching and a winning spirit will cott-
quer that most potent batting tri-
utnvirate composed of Collins, Baker
and Mclnnis. But will they? it re-
mains to be seen. There is something
uncanny about Connie Mack's non-
committal attitude this time every
year. He Wins the pennant in the
American League with several trumps
to spare, and then allows his veterans
to ease up in the ,hivouac of the
world's series. When
game is called he invariably roots out
such old dependable war horses as
Chief Bender and Eddie Plank. and the
result is generally 'wlld confusion in
the opposing camp. Titen’when the
wiseacres figure.that Bender and Plank
are about to crack. Mack unearths
some unheard of youngster to make
his opponents look‘hick. And just to
show them that the pitching did not
do it all. Collins, Baker and Mclnnis
have a most pernicious habit of put-
