Motoring Department, Sentinel:

To settle a little argument pill you,
kindly let me know in your next issue
if two “Blitzeu lienz” cars were used
first by Oldfield. Were they ever raced
by Burmnn‘? Yours truly, W. K. 4H.

The two Benz cars to which you
refer bear different names. That is,‘
oneIis called the "Blitzcn“ and the
other the "Jumbo." The lllitzeu was
'first driven by Oldfield and then
sold. flaw of these cars have been
driven at exhibition races by Bui‘iuan,
but Oldfield only drove the liiitzen
and that {or a short time. .

Motoring Department, Sentinel:
I have a high tension ~———«~ mag-

hard to crank. The magneto is sup-
posed to start any motor on one-quar-

the trouble? Can it be connected up
batteries to crank on it so
how and what kind of a coil would
you advise to connect. it with? Thank-

l have a 19l3 model Flying Merkel
inotorcycle and am having lots of
trouble trying to get rid of a metallic
knock which i think ”is the valv'es.
'The knock appears when the motor
is working slow, about fifteen miles
an hour. I then retard the spark and
the knock disappears. But when i
try to get up speed again by ad-
vaucihg the spark the knock appears
again, but the knock does not disap-
pear by“ retarding: Thla‘troubie l did

It seems. that the knock Via the motor

is due to loose bearings. When the

motor is pulling the knock is more

On my onecyiinder Cadillac car i
am constantly bothered with plugs
smoking up and becoming coated with
carbon, so that they ground. l‘leaue
advise in your “Auto Columns" how
to overcome this difficulty? W. 31. it.

This car is very old, and the cylin-
der is probably worn to such an cs-
tehtihat too much oil gets into the
combustion chamber. in order to
eliminate this trouble you will prob-
ably ilnd it necessary to have the

. cylinder rebored and new piston rings

fitted. Excessive carbonization is due
to an imperfect combustion of the
mixture. Too much oil will cause this
trouble. If you do not care to entail
the expense oi’ reboring the cylinder
you might try using oil of a heavier
grade and also cut down the supply.
An over-rich mixture will also cause
carbonization. Keep the mixture as
lean as possible and carry the sparks
as far advanced as possible.
