Fire, discovered too late to prevent
the complete destruction oi a barn,
three horses, two carriages, one
sleigh, several sets of harness, a
quantity of hay and straw and other
interior equipment, broke out at an
early hour this morning in the barn
owned by 'Martin Spahr in West Ce.
dur street. The contents were owned
by Jacob Roll. The loss was about
61.500 in a total, partially covered by
insurance with the J. M. Layton &
Company.
At two a. m. Mr. Bell from his bake~
shop saw the flames. He was the first
.to discover them. tile immediately
deserted his work and sought to get
out the frightened horses which drew ‘
his bakery wagons, but his efforts
, were unveiling, the domes being then
a soothing mssa which resisted his sV-
iery attempt at approach.
' Meantime Lawrence Howiey noticed
the fire and he called the tire depart-
ment by telephone. They responded

by Detective Sergeant Melberger, late
yesterday, after a hand~tolhand ngm.
,IAccordlng to the police the man had
sent letters to Mr. Dunham demanding
$5,000 and threatening him with death
it he failed to leave the money in a
certain designated place. The first
letter was sent on 'March 19 and the
second was mailed yesterday. One lec-
ter was signed “Flying 'Arrow," and
the second had the added words, “a
desperate man."

package containing blotting paper
near a Market street store yesterday.
and then kept a sharp lookout Hovey
was seen to take the package and than
the detective attempted to arrest him.
A severe hand-to-hand fight ensued.
Hovey drew an unloaded revolver
from his pocket and threatened to
shoot. Hovey, who is a powerfully
built man was apparently getting the

drew his revolver and fired twice. The
police station is not far distant, and
assistance was soon to be had. The
fight attracted quite a crowd.
Iliovey is in the lockup. The police
think he is demented, and it is probe»
ble that he will be examined as to his
sanity.
