Worcestcr is absolutely without tele-
'phone service today as the result of

Exchange at 940' clock this morning.
The fire started in the cable room 111
the basement. and worked through
the first door into the network of
cables and wires that carry the 18,000
telephone lines of' the city to the
switcliboards. The cables were some-
what damaged by tire, and water
poured on by the 'liremen drenched
the rest until every line was put out
of commission. Early this morning
web at ailpble repair ma :1 was aiding
in the work of pulling cables apart so
the wires may be d'i‘led. it was an-
nounced that no local telephone calls
would be accepted for the day. Even
partial service can not be restored be
fore Monday. A few toll lilies are be-
ing connected up for use for impor—
_tant business, but these can be used
only at headquarters. Business men
will have to go there to get out of
town calls. Although
quickly checked after two alarms had
called half the ppparatus 111 the city
to the scene. the damage will be
heavy, because of the destroyed

a movement for the organizatioa of
junior suffrage leagues. The suffra-
glsts {anally make it a principle not
to accept as members any children or
young girls: and this exclusion has
been highly unpopular with many of
the high school girls. and young g‘vis
who have already gone to work. Hence
these girls are beginning to form
themselves into Junior suffrage
leagues to be composed of girls be
tween the ages of thirteen and twenty-
one. Many such leagues had been
formed in New York, lilostou and other
cities before. the movement spread to
Connecticut, but it now seems likely
to spread rapidly in the towns and
cities of this state. New Milford led
the way with a Junior Franchise
