HONOLULU. March 26.-——Beilween
thirty and forty lives believed to‘ have
been lost by the blowing up of the ‘In-
tcr‘lsland steamer Maui, last night, off
iPearl Harbor.
From Font Kamehamtha soldiers ob-
served that the steamer was on fire.
'A few minutes later the .ship was seen
to blow up and lmmidiately sink.
Moe than thirty men, including the
crew and a number of laborers,niost-
1y Hawaiians, were abound.
Rumors are current that the steam-
er struck a mine, but the general opin-
ion is that a boiler explosion caused
the disaster.
With the aid of searchlights from
Fort Kamehameha, tugs and Japanese
sampaus are searching the searching
Ithe sea for any survivors that were
'able to keep afloat. \
The loss of all on board the steam-
'er is indicated, as it is believed the
ship sank so quickly that there was
no time to launch small boats.

the new city hall started this morn-
ing, ground being broken and a force
of men being at 'work cutting down
an apple tree that is in the way. When
the vault has been completed. Town
Clerk Herbert R. Smith will occupy
the present council chambers. Later,
when the new police- headquarters
are built, Judge Henry W. Gregory,
of the Norwalk Probate Court, will
probably take quarters in the present
police rooms.
The vault will be two stories 11
height. thus accommodating both the
town clerk and probate Judge.A

Finch stated this morning that he
will find it necessary to grant a pen
mit to the Second Taxing District for
the addition to the city hall, in the
nature of a vault. He said that if it
was city work, as the improvements at
the Putnam Hose House for school
purposes, then this would not be nec
essary, but as it is district work, he
feels it his duty to require the dis-
trict commissioners to have a permit.
He has inspected and approved the
plans.
