ward. A large volume of selling or-
ders 'was awaiting execution at the
opening, and almost every stock trad»
ed in was quoted at a lower figure.
Smelting, heaviest of the active shares,
gave way a point. Most of the lenders
lost largo fractions. The decline was
checked quickly. however, by the 11p-
pcarnnce of buying orders at the low-
er level. Partial recovery followed
and the bear attack was oilectually
halted, the market becoming dull after
half an hour's trading.

followed the narmw channel during
the morning as on recent days. Et-
forts to depress prices at the outset
were. of little avail, and subsequent
attempts to bring on an upturn were
equally unsuccessful. increasing sup-
ply at higher prices indicated that op-
portunities were being sought‘i’or dis-
posing of stocks. but this tendency
was neutralized by the sustained in-
vostment demand, which provided a
market for standard shares whenever
they were offered at concessions. The
general range held near yesterday’s
close although individual stocks broke
away from the dead level. New Yarn
