NEW YORK, Dec. 31..-Eight per-
sons, five men and three women, were
billed in an early morning tenement
house lire at 913 1Monroe street, in the
'towded east side district, today. 1111‘
teen persons were injured four sen
nusly, by jumping from lire-escapes.

One of the most delightful gather-
ings in East Avenue Methodist Church
for many months was the mite box
opening last evening. Considerably be

and they continued to come until the

A spirit of good cheer seemed to pre-
pail. The mite boxes were turned
in freely by those who had been saving
a penny a day for the past few months,
