themselves on the greatest equip-
ments that newspaper plums have
ever had, but they lack one possession
of the Menominee, Mich. Herold-
lmader and that is a woman managing
editor. She is Miss Katherine M.
Stiles, and since last October and has
exercised full control over the dos-
tlnles of tho. Herald-Leader and had
charge of 65 men, reporters, composi-
tors and all the other newspaper
workers,
Mien stiles told a. reporter some-
thing nbout her 12 years’ experience
in newspaper work. She is in New
York on business. Now the Very first

been in the habit, of being aoked when
her voontion has been divulged is: ‘

At this time. the managing editor of
the Herold-Leader was William F.
Troyes. The pathetic story of his
death and his devotion to his paper
become almost a byword in the Middle
West. He had gangrene oi the lungs.
and when he knew that he had only
12 hours to live he wrote to all the
20 metropolitan papers for which be
was correspondent telling them of his
condition and recommending Miss
Stiles to the place he was so soon to
vacate. in every case the newspapers
of Chicago and the other large cities
retained Miss Stiles as their corre-
spondent
To the Board of Directors of the
Herald- Lender he also recommended
her.
“l was ordered to 'slt in' at the
managing editor‘s desk," she said, “I
'dldn‘t think i’d stay there very
'loug, but i did and have been there
over since.
