indicate that the retail hat trade of
the past week has been close to a rec-
ord breaker. Last Saturday is said to
have brought an unprecedented rush
of business to nearly all of the leading
retail stores in New York. ‘ This state-
ment is confirmed, says the Danbury
News, by E. A. Mallory & Sons, who
lhave one of the handsomest retail
stores on Broadway. f‘. T. Joy, super-
intendent of 19. A. 'Mallory & Sons’,

way store did the greatest business in
its history last Saturday and that the.
rush has continued to a large extent
during the pl esent week.
From all polls of the country where
the fall sale of hats has begun silliilar
reports are coming ill and with them
a rush of duplicate orders that is mak- ,,
ing many of the local factories ex-
tremely busy. The demand for the
new styles of soft beta is especially
large, but there is also a brisk trade
in stiff hats. in New York stiff hats
are being worn this fall to a greater
extent than in several years before.
The blue soft hat with tapering
crown and velvet band and bow is ex-
tremely popular and soft but manufac-
xturers are having all they can
do to
fill their duplicate orders for these
hats. The demand for velvet for wo-
men’s hats has created a scarcity of
velvet in the wholesale markets and
manufacturers are having more or less
difficulty in procuring sudlclent mater-
ial to meet their requirements. While
blues lead in popularity there is also
a considerable demand for green soft
hats with velvet bands and bows to
match.

NEW YORK, Sept. 19.—~One hun-
dred and forty-Seven cases of typhoid
fever reportedslnce the first of Sep-
tember on the lower East Side were
traced yesterday to infected milk. The
health department found that all this
milk came from one company and
immediately ordered the company to
cease selling anything but pasteurized
milk.
The. recent epidemic was one of the
most virulent lilo health department
had to contend with. The health an-
thorltion found that all the families
got their milk from a dealer who oh-
talned his supply from the company.
Tile department now is trying to trace
the inflected supply to its original
source.

a rumor today that the Consumers’
League of Connecticut would bring to
the Governor a formal complaint again-
st the appointment of Miss Charlotte
M, Holloway, of New London, to be
an investigator of the conditions un-
der which women and girls of Connec-
ticut are employed. Miss Holloway
was named for the place a, few days
ago by Labor Commissioner Connol-
ly. in an interview this afternoon
