William Johnson, Cromwell, and
Clara Swanson, Portland,
Drowned
CROMWELL, Sept. 15.—Wllliam
Johnson. 17 years old, of Croniwall
and Willis Clara Swanson, 18 years old,
oil-Strong's lane, Portland, were drown-
ed in the Connecticut «River about 5
o'clock yesterday afternoon when a
canoe in which they were with Carl
Ludwig of Cromwell and Miss Ruth
Anderson of No. 398 Chestnut street,
New Britain, struck the waves from
a large yacht sailing nearby and was
capsized.
Neither Ludwig nor Miss Anderson
could swim, but they managed to re-
tain their hold upon the overturned
crai‘t until William Frazier, who had
witnessed the accideutvfrom the shore,
came to their aid. Johnson was able
to swim a little and made a heroic ei-
fort to save Miss Swanson, but the. lat
ter put up a frantic struggle In trying
to save herself and dragged Johnson
down, too. Captain Clark Smith, in,
recovered the body of Johnson about
'8 o‘clock last night, Medical Examiner
Charles E. Bush, after viewing the
body,-gave permission for its removal
to the undertaking rooms of A L.
Southmayd in ’llliddletown Up to a
late hour last night Captain Clark and
Mr. F'raziel, who have been dragging
with grappling irons, were unable to
recover the body of the girl and stlc
ceeded only in picking up articles of
clothing.
