Former Spanish Counsel Gener-

NEW YORK, Aug. 29.-—-Thousauds
of curios gathered in many lands and
istacked high in the apartments of
Hipo‘lite Uriarte, fer fifty years a
Spanish consul, fed a tire kindled in
lighting a cigar early today and block-
ed the way of the aged diplomatist and
his wife to safety. Uriarte was found
dead, leaning across a-window sill;
his wife. Marie Louise, mistook a
window leading to an air shaft for one
opening on a firoescape and plunged
four stories to her death.
Uriarte was 82 years old. For tour-
teen years he was Spanish Consul-
General in New York. His last ser-
vices was in Canada. During his
travels for his government he had new
stimulated souvenirs and momentous
of every country in which he had liv-
ed. They crowded every nook and
cranny or his apartments and in the
smoke. and coninsiotrresulting from
the. fire, effectually cut him oif from
escape.
The fire was kindled, it is believed.
when Uriarte .lit a cigar, which he in-
tended to smoke before going to bed.
The aged couple had been up until
a late hour celebrating the ' home
coming of their son, Louis, an account-
ant in Cuba.
