Imal members or the Naval
'Mllitla, who are to take the cruise to
Bermuda. on the gfinboat Machine,
which begins August 30th, are plau-
ning a great alone. The guuboat will
leave New Haven on the 30th lost,
in the afternoon, cruise on the sound,
past Montnuk Point and then lay her
course to Bermuda.
The purpose of! the trip is to give
the officers and men a thorough train-
ing in ocean-going. it is planned to
take the Machine through the Panama
Canal during January of next year.
This cruise will extend «to San Fran-
cisco. The trip to Bermuda will give
the officers and men that training in
seamnnshlp which. will enable them
to negotiate the longer cruise with
safety and credit.
The trip will be in command of
Cmmauder Eben Hill and the follow-

Rock South of Juneau and

SEATTLE, Wash, Aug. lit—«Fifty-
four passengers who sailed from Seat-
tle on the steamer State of California
last. Wednesday night were booked for
Juneau and Skagwny and presumably
were on the ship when she struck a
rock and sank in Gambler Bay, Alas-
ka, last Sunday morning. Twenty-two
passengers were taken on board at
Prince Rupert, Ketehiknn, Petersburg
Wrongs! and other points, and these
also were on the boat at the time of
the disaster, making a total of 76 pas-
sengers. Forty-three passengers were
rescued and taken to Juneau by the
steamer Jefferson. leaving" 33 who
probably have perished. :SeVen of the
crew are dead, making the total dead
forty.
These figures of the number of pas-
sengers are giVen by the Pacific Coast
Steamship Company. They cannot be
verified by the purser, who lost all his
records. it is possible that some of
the 54 passengers booked to sail from
Seattle changed their minds at the
last moment.
D. C. Perkins, the first wireless op-
erator, who is among the lost, was the
son of a wealthy San Francisco fam-
ily. He took up the study of wireless
because of the opportunities it offered
for adventure and a chance to see the
