NEW. YORK, Feb. 14.—-Jalncsl Pur-
bell, the gambler, who testified before
the aldermanic committee last week
that he had paid police graft over a
period of seventeen years, quarrcled
in their
apartment and began shooting. Mrs.
Purcell‘tainted, hut bullets struck their
thirteen‘year-old daughter Agnes, who
lay cowering in bed and killed “or 9.1.
most instantly. Thinking that he had
murdered both women, Purcell surren-
dered himself to the police and mm
locked up.
The gambler was so hysterical when
he staggered into a police station that
he was unable to give a coherent ac-
count of the affair. He and his wife
had quarreled nearly all night, he sob-

self and rushed at her with a revol-

which struck the girl. One pierced her
breast and right arm: another plowed

In order to keep up with the stan-
dard set by modern clothing 'stores.
Rogers & Stevens, recognized one at
the most progressive arms in the town
is planning big improvements for tile
South'iNbrwslk store in South Main
street, and the work‘will be started
shortly. When completed the appear-
ance of the store will be greatly on-
hanoed and the storefrontjwill be the
most modern of any in the city. ‘
Not long ago the entire interior or
store was made up-to-date as to its ap-
pointments and its fixtures, display
cases. racks and shelves were or-
ranged in considerable style.I Each
department was rearranged and the
decorating and lighting were made
modern and attractive in every parti-
cular.
The plans tor the remodeling of the
front of the store were exhibited to a
reporter by J. Emory Stevens, one of
the partners. this morning. The ex-
tent or the work is fully shown by the
working plans of the architect.

place the present old styles. The win-
dow space will be greatly increased

afford an opportunity for the display
of much stbclt which formerly could
not have been exhibited. .

store will he removed and an entrance
vestibule will replace them. instead
of two steps up. an incline will lead
into the store when the work is finish-
ed thus bumps out the latent idea
