In all my experiences as locomotive
engineer. ,my most interesting episode
was when l. was driving an express on

ting on the cab sent one day waiting
for a signal to pull out when i saw a
young couple come running down
through an alley that led straight to
the engine. The train was 11 long one
and where they came up were not
very likely to be seengheyond the bug-
gugo and express cars. The man car:
ried a. suit case and illewoman a hand ‘
bug. 0n reachiugthe platform he dart-
ed a glance back wliotelpersons were
getting into the train, then, looking up
at me, said hurriedly: '

“Say, engineer, will you let us ride
with you awhile?"

“Couldn't. It’s contrary to positive
orders."

“Would a hundred dollars repay you .
for the risk you would run '1"
"No, nor a thousand " ' ,

persons who had come to see fiieuds
on their Journeys. He didut seem to
know what to do. Then the young wo-
man took up the matter.

engine. My uncle is down there look.

shut me up on a trumped up charge.

She pleaded so passionately that she
