ing about trying to ascertain the
identity of the persons who thus took
the bull by. the horns and upon their

East Norwalk department incompe-
tent to handle the fire. The chief
and his hreeating ipddies are some—
what peeved at the reflection cast
’ upon their reputation as line dighters
‘ when there was no need of it.
It was proved that the East Nor—
wall-k men were thoroughly competent,
and in a short time succeeded in put-
ting out the file without any assist-
ance and without much damage, al.
though a terrific wind storm was
raging at the time.
The fire is supposed to have stow
ed outside on the northeast corner,
causes unknown. At any rate it was
burning right merrily when the de-
partment arrived. Chief Wheeler im-
inediately ordered out three lines of
hose and the blaze was attacked from
as many sides wt once. The result
of this course-of action was immed
lately evident and within a short time
the flames had been extinguished and
the excitement abruptly ended.
The only part of the building which
suffered were the unoccupied apart-
ments on the north side, in whichls
stored the odds and ends comprising
Robert O. Thompson‘s stock of plumb-
ing materials. The collar was slight
ly damageaand the kitchen connect»
all with Mrs. Hoyt’s apartments was
slightly damaged by water, the tire
singelng the door and cracking ,illle
glass in the same. Mrs. Hoytwss
uninsured and was to have incited out
of «the apartments today. Mr. Stoli
is insulod to the extent 'of 26,500,
with a Dorian broker it is estimated ‘
that the carnage amounted to about
$2 000.
