A nut once grew on a hickory
tree.
’Twas hard and green as a nut
should be.
I [It had neighbors a plenty who
rocked in the breeze
And held friendly chats with the
neighboring trees.
But this little nut seemed to be of
stone .
And bade everyone to leave it
alone.
Jack Frost knocked hard at an
unopened door.
Altho‘ its neighbors- were touched

Much pleasure they gave to the
children there
Who gathered them up and
shouted with glee.
The high winds came and blew
with their might.
But the little out held to the old
tree tight.
Even when coated with snow and
with ice
It hugged itself and declared it

At last. weather beaten and-
brown. it tell
And the dead leaves covered its
unshucked shell.
Its meat. dried to ashes, had giv—
en no pleasure.
No tree from its kernel its length
would measure.
There once lived a man in a little
hut .
