About lid-30 o'clock last night the
cry of warning of the coming flood
reached the City Hall. Within thirty
minutes a wall of water many test
high descended on the city from Cher-
ry ireek which flows through the
Country Club grounds. passing within
five blocks of the City Hall. the coun-
ty hospital, the West Side Court. out
taut. it flipped out concrete walls
that confined it for two miles. ides-
troyed bridges and hundreds of small
dwellings. driving the occupants
lrom their homes lo roots. from whiph
they" were rescued by members of the
police and tire departments.-
Reaching, the Union Station. the
torrent rushed three 'tect deep,
through 11119 yards. putting locomotive
tires out. mnrooning several hundred
pzfssongcns and closing the city to in-
coming'm- outgoing traffic. in half
an hour miles of runaway cars were
put out of com-mission, while a sewer
undermined, broke and flooded Capital
Hill. the aristocratic section of the
city.
A general call to physicians met
with speedy response. The cellars of
downtown storm and hotels were
flooded.
This morning the flood was at a re-
ceding point and the parties organized
during the night by Mayor Arnold
were prepared to begin the work ola
surveying "the. flood damage and aid-
ing its victims.
Not until the telephone and telc
graph lines are restored today will
the full extent of the ravage be
known.
