great was the rush of lnili operatives
hack to the 1001113 and spindles this
morning after the strike of nine weeks
that several departments were nimble
:o accommouute more than a small
part of the operatives, and thousands
were obliged to return to their homes.
Today marked the initial end of Latr-
rence'g great textile war in which 22;
000 mill hands were on strike at one
time. There are still between 3.000
and 11.000 operatives holding out for
increased wages that will equal the
advance offered by. the mills against
which trouble has been declared at all
end. The strike is still 111 effect, es-
pecially against the Everett, Arling-
tull. i’ucllic, inlwreuce uck and Us-
woco Mills. At those mills about one
half 01' the total operating force an
poured ready for work. At the Pilot-
lit- and Uswoco Mills the number of
elllployes was nearly two~tuirds of the
normal force.
The Eycrctt Mill opened for the first
that» since the beginning oi the strike
nine weeks ago and about onedlalf of
the usual number oi employee result»
ed work. The company, although of-
fering an increase of 7% percent. does
not meet all the conditions of the in-
dustrial workers' strike committee
and the latter have not lifted the ban
of strike from this factory yet.
The persons still on strike were ac-
tively engaged in picket duty. Th
main force of pickets held forth at the
Everett Mill, where the returning op-
eratives were mostly men. Polish
women largely made up the line of
pickets.
An early return to nOrmal condi-
tions in most oi the mills and in the
city is practically certtlln. The last Oi
the military forces. which have reliev-
ed other on duty for two months, will
evacuate the city within a few days.
'l‘wo companies, 0 of Worcester and
K, of Clinton, of the Ninth Regiment,
were dismissed today and took part in
the Evacuation Day parade in Boston.

Rumors oi trouble in connection with
the strike of 1.000 operatives at the
plants of the Barre Wool Combing
Company and the Nornani Worsted
Company were heard today, but up to
the middle of the forenoon nothing
had occurred to break a quiet and al-
lnost normal morning. The mills were
closed and the strikers refrained from
congregatipg in large bodies.‘
Trouble was anticipated over the re-
turn to Barre from the Worcester Jail
of five prisoners arrested _on Saturday
bllt none occurred. All o the prison-
ers were to be brought into the dili-
trict court at Barre Center for u hear-
ing into this afternoon. .They‘have
engaged Congressman Tilnyer. of Wor-
cester, to defend them.
