Mr. McElt-oy came to Norwalk about
a year ago and when the city contem-
plated paving its streets, he stepped
in line for a bid on the work. He
came out the lowest bidder and all the
necessary qualifications being com-
piled with, secured the contract. from
the council.
Matti street, as far as Nash’s cor-
ner from Wall street, is to be paved
wtih brick. Water street is to be pav-
ed with the same material. West
avenue is to have. a covering of wood
block. This is a work that will take
the greater part of the . summer
months and perhaps it will extend into
next winter.
Water street will be paved first and
lthen West avenue and Main‘ streets
will be taken up. The contractor on-
tlciputes having an especially large
gang of men that the work may pro-
ceed with rapidity and that the streets
may not be liupl open any longer than
necessary. ‘ '
Chief Thomas Leatherlund, of the
{police department, has helm busy pre-
paring tor the paving work, for it will
the necessary to have oilicers on traf—
’iic duty most of the tiny and night in
selclul plates along the tents of the
(Olilltiil. The chief has been working
out a schedule. which he has nearly
completed, and it is expected that litt-
der his system the city will be. well
cared for with relation to the usual
heavy summer traffic.
The paving will necessitate one hall
of the street being closed to traffic
all the time and this will make con-
gestion unless the place is well po-
liced. Officers will be stationed at.
such vantage points as will enable
them to keep things movingand it is
expected that but little trouble will
ensue.
Therein a plan to have the autoists
going through the city take the route
down tBarnum's Hill from Westport
avenue, up North avenue, across Main
street, through Cross street, up Mott
avenue and down Franklin avenue
during the time that West avenue is
torn up. Another plan is to have
them come down Mill Hill, go through
Wall street, thence through Mott ave-
nue and down.Franinn avenue. This
will be necessary when Main street.
is torn up at the'place where North
avenue and Cross street meet.
The matter is one that will take a
be decided In a moment. Therefore
those concerned are working diligently
that the arrangements may be com-
pleted in time.
The highway committee of the city
council is making progress with the
“plan'to widen Main street during tbs
paving work according to their report
made at the meeting last Monday
night. Most of the adjoining property
owners are pleased to give a little of
the land to the city in order that
the street may be widened at its nar-
row parts. .
There is between three and four that
and it is expected that the paving
work cannot be commenced before
next month, though should the warm
weather come early and the frost dis-
appear, it Is quite likely to imagine
that the real work would be common

real paving work is started there Is
much to be done, however, such as
getting the materials on the ground
and organising the work.
