KILLED LIFE-LONG FRIEND.
LYNN. Mass. March 7.——Mrs. Jes-
sie Chapman, who last night shot and
killed her friend and neighbor. Mrs.
Eva Florence Ingalls, appeared in the
police court today. After the 'com-
iplaint charging her with murder had
been read, no plea was made and
Judge Lummus ordered the woman
held without bail for a hearing on

Mrs. Chapman showed little emotion
while in the court room. Charles S.
Chapman, the defendant's husband,
maintains that his wife was mentally
unbalanced at the time of the shooting,
and It is expected that her defense
will he conducted on the allegation
that she was insane.

Nearly two months sftor discovery
that the Windsor Locks Savings Bank
had been systematically looted for
over 40 years by its treasurer, the late
Alfred W. Converse, the officers and
depositors of the bank are today to.
tally at sea for a solution of the mud-
dle. The depositors want the direc—
tors and other officers to go down Into
their own pockets to make 11p the
deficit. The directors reply that they
are depositors also and not desirous
of doing any more than anyone else.
The directors will meet, probably
next Monday, and the depositors will
await the result of the meeting to see
what action will be taken. in the
meantime, the examination of the
bank books will have been finished
and the exact amount of (Ionverse’s
det‘alcatlon determined. The direc-
tors ai'e still hopeful that the final
result will not be as bad as first re-
ported. They admit, however, that
(‘onvcrse stole at least $40,000, which,
computed with interest, would make
the bank's lose about $100, 000.
RICHESON MAKES NO PLEA FOR
COMMUTATION.

George D. McKay, of Rowayton was
operated upon at the Norwaik Hospi-
tal yesterday afternoon by Dr. Will-
iam J. Tracey. assisted by Drs. L. M.
Allen and H. C. Sherer. .
Peter Cuneo, of South Norwaik, who
has been undergoing treatment at the
Bridgeport City Hospital for some-
time, has returned to his home. Mr.
Cuneo is somewhat improved, but is
not yet a well man by any means.

evening, the lodge received on invita-
tion from Rev. John Stapleton to at-
