iuan ran the train on several miles
until it was signalled to a halt. at a
camp fire alongside the track where
three other bandits waited. Here the
baggage and mail cars were detached
front the. passenger coaches and be-
fore any of the train crew knew what
was happening, the looomotive with
its light load was hurrying farther ill-
to the country.
While one of the bandits held a gun
over the firemen, the remaining four
of the band climbed into the express
and mail coaches and covered the
messengers and clerks.
' The. engine with the two cars mean-
while proceeded to a point a mile east
of Hulbert. Ark.‘ Then the robbers
ransacked the postal car, blew open
the safe in the Wells Fargo Express
car.- gathered their plunder and fled
in the darkness.
They had obtained a good start at
tiight long before an alarm could be
given. The telegraph wires into Mem-
phis had been cut: The first intima-
tion of danger to the train came to
employes of the Rock Island at the
western terminus of the Mississippi
Bridge. They heard heavy detona-
tions, apparently front a point far In
the country. The racket was made by
the explosions of ammunition that
was destroyed when the combination
baggage and express car burned after
the safe had been blasted,
Recalling last November‘s holdup.
the Rock island employes sent in a
hurry call to the Memphis police.
Quickly a switch engine was manned
by. a posse, but long before they
reached the holdup scene the robbers
had vanished Into the darknesa of
,nearby woods.
Rumors that. the bandits secured
unusually valuable plunder had not
been verified early this forneoon. The
express company has given out no,
statement of Its loss.
‘At noon It was said that between
$60,000 and $75,000 had been taken.

AUTO GIVES WILD PERFORMANCE

figure out how it all happened, but.
about midnight Saturday an automo-

Anyone would think that after this
series of catastrophles. an average
automobile would be brought to a
halt. But this auto was full of gin-
ger and so were its occupants—~ginger
or something else. The car sped on
merrily at the rate of about a mile
a minute and disappeared into the
night. L. D. Plumb and William
Hickey. owners of the fences that suf-
fered. think that the machine must
have been a wonder.

Operator Louis Gray. of the Massio
Wireless and Marine Transmission
Company. Is at present obliged to work
night and day and has but little time
for rest and none for recreation. His
post is made trying because of the un-
usual heavy ice on the eastern shores
of the sound.
The trouble started when the steam-
er .I. C. Austin. bound from New York
to New London struck a rock in Hunt
Ington harbor and sank, taking two of
the barges in tow to the bottom with
her. This was on the last day of Jan-
uary that this accident occurred and
since that time a tug of the Scott
Wrecking Company of New London.
the Tasco, has been trying to reach
her.
The ice has prevented the Tasco
from getting to the place where there
is work to do and at present the tug
is frozen in a foot of solid Ice, from
which point to the nearest open water
ls about a mile. The situation of the
tag is nottseridns,.but the chances of
getting out. of the ice are slight.
The tug-Is off Northport and about
five miles fromihhe sunken steamer and
barges. The, men are comfortable and
in no danger of freezing or starring.

The Tasco is equipped with the Mas-
sie wireless system and this is what
keeps Operator Gray so busy. The
Tasco transmits messages to Operator
Gray at the station at Wilson's Point
and he has to send them 111 turn to the
offices of the companv In New London.

less.
Mr. Gray is standing up well under
his constant vigil, but will be thankful
when he may rest.

Trotter Owned by s. Mandolson,
of Stamford, Buns Away in
Norwalk
‘When thrown from his two-wheeled
gig at the corner of Main and Wall
streets yesterday afternoon about 3:30
o‘clock, S. Mandelson, of Stamford,
had a narrow escape front serious in-
jury. Ills horse was Injured badly,
but the man was only bruised.
Mr. Mandelson Is a horse dealer of
Stamford and he had driven to blur
walk yesterday With a trotter which
he values highly. Tile horse was
frightened In West \I'all street anti
started to run away. Mandelson held
tightly to the reins and attentepted to
quiet the horse, but to no avail.
When the horse reached the corner
of Main street a sudden desire to
round the corner overtook lillil. A
trolley car and a coal wagon made
him turn quickly to make the corner
clear. and in doing this the gig over-
turned, throwing- Mandelson to the
sidewalk at the lloston Store corner.
In an attempt to hold the horse from
further progress Mandclson clung to
the reins attd was dragged about thir-
ty feet on his face along the sidewalk
and cutb.
The prompt action of Jack Seunonr,
a w-ell known horseman of Norwalk. In
catching the horse as he passed him,
by the head, probably saved Mandel-
son and his turnout. It was not until
the horse had put Itls head and shoal--
ders Into the vestibule of the side en-
trance to the Boston Store. frighten-
ing those withimlnto thinking that he
was about to enter, that'hls progress
was halted
In his trip over the curb the horse
had lnltiied his leg badly and the pain
caused hint to be. more frightened and
dlillcult to hold than before. Seymour
was thrown front his hold on the atti-
nutl‘s head and thcn'll‘landelson took
his place. The horse was backed out
of the' Iioston Store and immediately
shook his master off and started hp
the sidewalk. this time attempting to
enter ltntchford‘s cafe. Here he was
finally stopped.
Edward W. Kelley, Jr., and Edward

pharmacy, who had witnessed the af-

Number of Friends Last Night.
A number at friends journed to the
home of Miss Lucy Craig. In Putnam
avenue, last evening, and gave her the
surprise of her life. It was done. so
quietly that Miss Craig was some-
what bewildered and for a few mo.

sion. As soon as the effects of the
surprise were over, Miss Craig for-
gave Iter friends for taking her tin-
awares and proved a. very entertain-
ing hostess.

Schaub. Lee and Craig favored with
piano selections, while Mrs. William
Craig, Jr., and Alfred Kraemer fav-
ored with several vocal selections.
