The interestingdigures of school
enumeration are well worth careful
study. if we mistake not, they are
the first official figures since the fa-
mous census of 1910 which set Hart-
ford down as having 98,915 inhabi-
tants and Bridgeport as having 102.-
059. Taking the children enumerated
as a basis for calculating Itotai popu-
lotions, it appears 2 thotirBrldgcpcrt
with its ration of one school child to
each 4.585 of .people, has news. pop-
. ulation of 105,280, and 'seventyasevsn
hundredths of =8. personLWhile Hare
sol-d with its lless ratio tit-4.64 has a
total population off-105,133 and twelve
hundredths. Let the fractions of an

against 105,133. in a year or so we

hearing on the charges. preferred
against Cattle Commissioner Heman
O. Averill, by Dr. Atwood. or New
Haven. will take place in the supreme
court room, February 15. This deci-
sion was reached at a preliminary
hearing of the parties'lnterested in the
office of the governor yesterday. The
defense will be a- general den-Ial of the
allegations of neglect of duty, incom-
petence or misconduct. The com-
missioner has engaged Judge Wil-
liam' J Henncy, of this city, to rep-
resent him at the hearing before the

Witnesses For and Against it,
and Reserve Decision

Before the county commissioners,
Simeon Peace, Whitman S. Mead and
John F. Bropliy. in the Norwalk town
court room, this morning. the hearing
on the remoustrtlnco against Cobble
Hill saloon, conducted by Michael
Kudla, who had his license transferred
from Main street to that location ill
the fall, was heard. but no decision
had been rendered when the hearing
was declared own.
The relnonstrance to tile commis-
sioners-contained the names of twenty
signers. lint three of these appeared
In court this morning. and one. ii‘redv
erlck 'l’airchlld, had evidently changed
his mind. lor he appeared for the de-
tense.
Attorney John Keogh, of Keogh &
Cand'cc, represented Kudla. The sign
ore of the relnonstrance were not rep
resented by counsel. James E. hills.

About fifteen witnesses for the de-
fense were brought Into court by At-
torney Keogh and all testified that the
saloon hull caused no trouble, to their
knowledge. Severn] reside within a
stone's throw of theplace in, question.
but all agreed that the saloon was all
right in its location. and one went so
far as to say It was necessary to the
locality.
Most of the witnesses have children
of varying ages passing the saloon
many times daily. They. however. do
not feel that the Influence Is bad for
their growing sons and daughters, and
no one has suffered anything but per-
fect treatment since Mr. Kudla has
conducted the place.

James E. Elle, Jr.. told of the. quiet
little suburb of Broad River and how
it is disturbed by "men under the in-
fluence of intoxicants." He said that
several times he would have run down
some of these men with his automo-
bile 'had he not had his headlights
shining brightly. He lived further
away than any of thewitnesses for the
defense bf the remonstrnnce, save pos-
sibly one.
Mr. Ella was asked by Commission-
er Mead if he had not known that a
remonstrance against the transfer of
the license was made at the time the
transfer was. considered, and then
withdrawn. Mr. Ells did not know
about it.
Mr. Ella was not sure that the men‘s-
he claimed most of them to be from
Hoy t's Ntirsery~had purchased their
lntoxicants at the Cobble Hill saloon.
