Mr. Ashhurst, according to this man.
appeared cheerful and as he walked
onto the pier be told the chairman

the last trace of him Chief Woodrurl
concluded that Mr. Ashhurst either
foil or jumped from the pier into the
océan. The portion of the pier extend-
ing for out into the ocean is unfreuuen
led and not lighted in winter and it
would not be diflioult for anyone to
walk out to the end without being ob
served.
It is known that Mr. Ashhurst. who
was 72 years old. was not well and
come to "The Shore" for rest. He had
apartments at the Marlborough-Blen-
heim Hotel with several members of
his family.
Dragging of the ocean about the pier
was continued today without any hope
of finding a body. as the tide probably
would have married a corpse up or
down the coast. The beach for a dis
lance of about ten miles also is being
searched and watched.
