Chulch in West avenue was in t even-

lent lecture ot Hon. S. 8. McClure, the
edltor of McClure’s Magazine who
entertained the large audience with
his talk for some time. He is. as a
speaker. intellectual, witty, and decid-
edly interesting. He began with rem-
iniscences of the hlception of the mag—
azine. tie told of his,first cXperlencs
as an editor of the college paper and
tor of a magazine for Colonél Pope, of
the Pope Manufacturing company.
This magazine afterward became the
Outing magazine.
'l‘hcse reminiscences aboundcd in in-
teresting and witty sayings and the au-
dience was delighted. The speaker
then went on to tell of how his health
broke down and he had been compelled
to take trips abroad many times every
year in search of health. At this point
the real serious lecture began and Mr.
McClure called it the "Relation of
Government to Morals.”
lie said that in going back and forth
from Euiopo to Amcilcn he noticed
that there is a greater prevalence 0f
mime in this country than in others
Taking murder on an index to all other
crimes, he proved that there is from
ten to thirty times as many murders
here as in others.
Mr. McClure bad a great number of
statistics with which he proved that
our nation is at the bottom of the list
of all nations in the world, who ltrlcp
statistics, in the amount of crime. He
put among the leading causes for this
condition the kind of government in
America, which be designated as a
government of the check and balance
system. As an illustration he used the
brake on. the wagon and said that the
broke in the U. S. Government works
going up hill and on a level as well
as it does going down hill.
Continuing he said that. the govern
ment positions are not sought after
by our young turn of the best talent.
