Henry T. Blake, of Neyilaven to the
outcry all over the state at the exas-
perating complexities, confusions, de- .
lays and wholesale rejection of votes,
which has attended the first trial of
the Australian ballot law in Connecti-
cut nnd requested his opinion whether
they wore likely to diminish with Its
future use. Mr. Blake Is well known
as perhaps the only man in the state
le0 has made a thorough study of the
law on Its operation during the last
twenty years in other states, having
compiled several thousand newspaper
clippings bearing on the subject, all
of them as he asserts, showing that
everywhere alike the Australian bal-
lot has proved to be the prolific source
of almost every evil that is possible In
a voting system, such as perplexing to
the voters, the cause of endless mis-
takes. the foe of independent voting,
and in many respects to be as the New
York Tribune called it. “An ambus-
cude of trickery and fraud.” At. two
former sessions of the general assem-
bly (In the 90's when the adoption of
the Australian ballot was being urged,
Mr. iilake appeared before the indi-
ciary committee with his statistics I18
its sole opponent. and on both ocea-
sions it was unanimously reported
asalnst by the committee. When It
was up at the last session of the legis-
lature, hir. Blake not being informed
of the. time set tor the committee hear-
ing, taller] to appear and the law was
passed without debate in either house
and by a practically unanimous vote.
In reply to the reporter, Mr. Blake
at first said that he was inclined to
let the voters of the state find out for
themselves how they liked the new
method of voting. wheieh without any
general denraud for a change has been
so suddenly thrust upon them as a
vast improvement upon the old one.
