Mayor Wolfe announced today his
appointments to the city board of esti-
mate and taxation. The appointments
have been awaited with a great deal
of interest, for it has persistently ru~
mored for Weeks that Herbert A.
Mathewson would be dropped from
the board. it has been known right
along that a campaign of opposition
was“ being worked against Mr. Maths
eweon. it therefore did not occasion
as much surprise as might otherwise
have been the cano,'whon it became
known that Mayor Wolfe had appoint-
ed Frank H. Fitch in Mr. Mathewsou's
pluce.‘
While it was lmown that Mr. Math-
ewson was not particularly keen for a
rte-appointment, it has become known
that. realising the trend of develop-
ments of the past. few weeks. be pre-
fcrred to stand on his record and have
the issue of whether he would be re-
appointed or turned down. come to an
issue. »
The terms of three members of the
board run out this year, those of Mr.
Mathewson. Charles J. l’idgeoa and
itdwurd F. Knapp. The board is bi-
pnrtisan and it is up to the mayor to
keep it so. He therefore appointed
two Democrats and one Republican,
which will evenly balance the board
between the two parties. Mayor Wolfe
reappointed Mr. Knapp, and in addi-
tion to appointing Mr. bitch to s ccecd
Mr. Mathewson, named Eugene filn
us a successor to Charles J. Pldgeon.
who has been nominated for the city
council by the Democrats.
The board of estimate and taxation
as now constituted. consists of Rich-
nrd J. Cutbill, General Russell Frost
and Frank H. Fitch. Republicans. and
Edward -i~‘. Knapp. John F. McMahon
and Eugene sums. Democrats.

obtained samples from several differ-

take to the state laboratories and have

inspector McKeon has had the milk
of the local dealers analyzed and this
action on the part of the state in only
to coniirm his reports. lie says that
on the whole his inspection showed
that the milk was all right. but that
there are several routes that. have been
ordered to improve the conditions oi
the dairy and milk. or they shall be so-
verely dealt with. He said that it is
not the purpose of the inspectors to
frighten the citizens or dealers about
the conditions, but only to warn them
to be careful. They are going about
getting samples of the milk from the
various routes today.
The inspectors met last evening
with the Norwsik Board of Henlihand
told them what they were going to do
and talked over the situation thorough-
ly.

Dr. ii. 13. West. South Norwaik
health officer. issued a mcommonda‘
tion to the public of the city today that
they boil milk before using it. no a pre-
caution ngoinst typhoid foyer. While
there has been on extensive inspec-
tion of the milk supplied locally. lev-
erni cases oi typhoid have developed
in the last week, and inasmuch as the
inspection of the water has shown no
typhoid germs. Dr. West lays the ty-
phoid to the milk.
