government has refused dually Portu-
gal’s proposals for the arbitration of
the Macao boundary dispute concern-
ing which the two governments have
been negotiating since last March.
The island of Macao is situated at
the west side of the entrance to the
Canton River and is inhabited by Chi-
nese and Portuguese. The city of Ms~
one, on a peninsula of the Island, was
settled by Portuguese merchants in
the latter part of the sixteenth cen-
tury, and subsequently ceded to Por-
tugal by China. Portuguese interests
have been gradually extended through
the territory adjacent to the city of
Macao and the adjoining islands of
Talpa and Columns. The city is a port
of some consequence and its trade has
two races. China'holds that the only
concession of territory ever made to
Portugal was limited by the boundar-
ies of the city and demands that the
surrounding territory and islands be
evacuated by thas-countr'y. Portugal
sent an envoy to Canton last spring.
