liere is a sad chicken story: Mrs.
W. W. Cochran does not keep chick-
ens. but there is an old hen which for
some reason became attached to her
household and was a great pct. One
day the hen wanted to set; and Mrs.
Cochran allowed it to and after a
short time the hen bad a brood of
chickens. which the Cochran family
was very fond of. One day the little
chickens were out in the rain and
nearly drowned; Mrs. (‘ochran rush-
ed out in the rain. gathered them up.
wrapped them carefully in a shawl
and put them on a chair next to the
kitchen stove. The chickens were
alive and all right. A big fat woman
came in to Mrs. Cochran's to set out
of the rain and sat down by the kitch-
en stove to not dry. Mrs. Cochran
went into the kitchen. after a while.
and looking around said to her dnugh~
ter: “Katie. where are my chickens?"
Katie did not know and they looked.
