Automatic Telephones.
The telephone pay stations in this
pennies. Officers of the Southern New
England 'l‘elcphone Company have
tested the coins in various instru»
merits and have found that they (in

The new one cent pieces are a little
larger and heavier than the old ludiun
head coins. and because of this fact
the story was circulated that the tel-
ephone company was likely to be
(heated through their use instead of

Since the report was circulated a
few days ago that the pennies could
be used in toll stations, the collectors
of the telephone company, it is said.

tempt to defraud thecompany in this
way is shown by the number of stu-
tions which yielded up the pennies.

over the country were pretty much

“Some ingenious but unscrupulous
fellow had thousands of lead slugs
struck off. They were about the size
and weight of a fire-cent piece. and
could he. used with success in a toll
station. On these sings this person
stamped the words. ‘l'lo not use in a
telephone pay station.‘ This was in
tended to get around the law, but it
failed to do so. These words were, of
course, a direct Invitation to do just
what they told the owner not to do.
Thousands of those slugs were sold
on the streets, a steel; of no particu-
lar number selling for fire cents, and
many hr the purchasers worked ,them
off on the telephone wuipiiiiy. This
