This exceeds the ten mile flight
made by the Wet ht brothers‘ aero-
plane from Fort yer to Alexandria
and back several weeks ago. Much
longer flights within a short circle.
however, have been made by the
Wrights and longer crosscouutry
flights have been made abroad.
Mr. Willard. who has been making
short flights almost daih in the ma

of friends gathered to watch his

1:30 est in the air and going off at a
fast clip. it was quickly only a speck
on the horizon. Soon it disappeared
behind the trees and for nearly ten
minutes the Watchers waited expect~
antly. fearful of an accident, but hope‘
ful for the aviator's success. Nearly
fifteen minutes had elapsed when the
speck again appeared miles away in
the direction of ,Wéstburv. It was
growing larger every minute and the
watchers were pro ing 'to congratu-
late Mr. Willard hen the machine
began to glide slowly downward and
then landed in a field between Min-
cola and Westbury. about two miles
from Mineola. .lumplrrg in an automo
:bile. the watchers found Willard's
machine undamaged by the landing
and with the aviator tinkering with
the magneto. That part. of the mech-
anism which prmides the spark for
the ignition of the gas was deranged.
but Willard said the aeroplane glided
gracefully and easily to the ground
and alighted without a mishap after
the power was shut off. On his flight
be passed over several sets of tele-
graph wires and groups of trees and
once when he passed a group of Ital-
ian luborerse, they quit work and
cheered him.
The machine wnsreturned to Min-
eola, where the trouble with the mag-
neto will be remedied.
