For Norwalk and vicinity: Showers
followed by clearing tonight. Satur-
day fair. The disturbance that was
central over upper Michigan yesterday
morning has moved southeastward
and is now central near Buffalo, N. Y.
It is raining this morning from Cin-
cinnati eastward to the coast and as
far south as Virginia. Precipitation
has been general during the. past‘ 24
hours in the northern sections east of
the Mississippi river. Moderate tem-
eratures prevail in all sections. Con-

SIKH FOOLS A LAWYER.

There is a Sikh out in- Victoria, 13.
0.. where Sikhs are about as popular
as Japanese in San Francisco. who got
himself out of a serious predicament
by a clever ruse. He was up against
the law and as he was something of a
black sheep even among the Sikhs it
looked as if it would go hard with him.
He had had a bad record in Hong-
koag and this was known to other
Sikhs and to the prosecuting lawyer.
So be arranged to have an unfriendl.v
Sikh informed that for a crime in
Hongkong he had been branded on the
left arm. The unfriendly Sikh lost
no time in passing the information to
the prosecutor.
The lawyer held the information un-
til he wanted to make a telling point
at the trial. Then he pointed an ac-
cusing finger at the Sikh and called
out. sternly:
“Pull up the sleeve on your left arm
and let the court see the brand placed
there by Hongkong justice."
The Sikh obeyed. His arm was
without blemish. The unfriendly Sikh
and the lawyer did not know that
branding criminals is not inefashion
in Hongkong. The point was so tell-
ing that the accused Sikh got off.

The dandelion is a dandy barometer.
one of the commonest and most reli-
able. it is when the blooms have
seeded and are. in the fluffy, feathery
condition that the Weather prophet
faculties come to the fore. In line
weather the ball expands to the full,
bill. when rain approaches it shuts like
an umbrella. If the Weather is in-
clined to be showery It keeps shut all
the time, only opening when the dan-
ger from the wet is past.
The ordinary clover and all its varie-
ties, including the trefoil and the
rockrock, are also barometers. When
rain is coming the leaves shut together
like the shells of an oyster and do not
open again until fine weather is us-
surcd. For 11 day or two before rain
comes their stems swell to an appre-
ciable extent and stiffen so that the
leaves are borne more uprigbtly than
usual. This stem swelling when rain
is expected is a feature of many flow-
ering grasses.

as if to offer less resistance to the
