Trouble Over a Division oi the Rates
oi lhe Two Corporslions on Again
NEW HAVEN. May 19.—-—lt is ascer-
tained that the controversy between
the New York. New Haven and Hart-
ford Railroad Company and the Adams
Express Company is not the renewal
of an old dispute. but is based upon a
new dispute relating to division of
rates under the contract. of the two
corporations. The amount involved in
the dispute and In tho claim of the
New Haven Company is a very large
one and extends back through a long
series of years involving the question
of interpretation of the contract be-
tween the two corporations
The contract referred to provides
for the service of the Adlms Express
Company over the New Haven system.
the New Haven Company suplying the
express cars and the Adams Express
Company providing for distribution at
the points of destination. included in
the New Haven system are any lines
acquired and the lines of the Central
New England system. Under the con-
tract the Adame Express Company
pays the New Haven 40 per cent. of
the gross receipts until. the receipts
amount to 33.750.000 or more, when
the rallroad‘s percentage rise to 46
per cent. The Adams Express Com-
pany, however, guarantees that the 40
per cent. shall not fall below 81,200.
000. Under existing conditions the re-
ceipts of the New Haven Company ac-
cording to the last annual report from
express service were 32.176.916 indi-
cating that the present gross receipts
of the Adams Express Company for
service upon the system amount to
nearly 85,000,000. It is understood
one of the questions in dispute rs
to the pro rating system of tlib ex-
press compan) on service outside of
the New Haven system. The contract
between the two corporations Is a ten
year contract with power of termina-
tion by either party .on one year's no
tics and was made in 1905. The con-
tract. however, would be terminable
by either party in case of its viola-
tion. Outside of the New Haven sys-
tem the main business of the Adams
Express Company Is on' the Pennsyh
vania and the Chicago. Burlington and
Quincy systems.
A somewhat singular feature of the
case Is that the Adams Express Com.
pany is understood. to be a large hold
er of New Yorlr. New Haven and Hart-
ford Railroad Company's shares. the
latest stock list accessible indicatina
that their holdings 0: such shares was
about 8,400,

a long debate in which It was asserted
that the bill curried with the words
"supervisor of motor Vehicles," the
designating of an office under which

therefore he would simply move the
acceptance of the report and passage
of the bill. He expressed 11 desire to
answer any questions which might be
raised. Senator Higgins raised the
question as to the meaning, f‘supervi-
