i HARTFORD, April 29.—-—'l‘he legisla-
tive committee on shell fisheries will
probably report favorably a bill in-
creasing the state tax an oyster
grounds. The increase will not be
great, but the aggregate of the addi-
tional revenue will be considerable.
The members of the committee is-
vor this. and most all the oyster grow-
ers have admitted that it would not be
an injustice. The committee is not
favorably disposed toward the measure
which would place all oyster grounds
under the state, taking from towns
their rights in beds contingent to them.
The committee has practically con-
cluded its hearings and only a short
executive session will be necessary to
complete its work.

A death occurred ill Slullliqu the
other day which passed quite unnotic-
ed by the pllbllc generally and yet it
marked the end of a man who had
once achieved a great deal of distinc-
tion as a newspaper man and circus,
manager. He died at a sanitaritlm
where he had been a patient for four
years and. his name was John W. Ham
ilton. He was a brother of “'i‘ody“-
Hamilton, the famous press agent of
the Barnum it Bailey circus. but it was
not his brother's reflected glory that
gave him distinction. When he was
19 years old he was the city editor of
the Evening Telegram, n recold which
plobnblv'will not be equalled in a
long time. He was latel the city editor
of the Evening Journal and then with
Leander Richardson. who. by the
way, lived at Shippull a few summers
ago. became the ovtner of the Dra-
ulatic News. in the show line he. was

Show, and W. C. Coup‘s h'llOW, and
was one of the organisers of the. 11er-
nlli'n & Bailey circus. At one. time he

Wild West, and was later manager
