Through the efforts of Represen-
tative Henry, the agricultural depart-
ment has decidcd to continue experi-
ments in tobacco culture in Connecti-
eut. says a Hartford dispatch to the
Hartford Courant. Some tiure ago the
department. proposed to abandon this
work, and leave it. to the state.
Mr. Henry recently took up the mat.-
ter with Secretary Wilson, and Dr. B.
'l‘.‘ Galloway, chief of the bureau of
plant industry, explaining that the
state could not carry on the experi-
ments. Today Mr. Henry got. a letter
from Dr. Galloway, promising to con-
tinue the work, and. after reviewing
results attained in the past, future
work is outlined in the letter as fol-
lows:
“The breeding still requiring atten
lion in Connecticut relates almost on-
tirely to-the improvement of the ordin~
ary field type of tobacco. The gradual
deterioration of tires types is due to
luck or proper selecti n. and the high
quality of wrapper tobacco grown in
Connecticut. are, to continue in profits-
hle cultivation. We have made quite a
number of hybrids and selections, and
one of these. which we have named
theHalliday Havana, has many of the
qualities desired. it is a very high
yielder, giving nearly 3,000 pounds of
leaf per acre; the shape and texture or
the leaf is very fine and the cOIOI- is
good. but it is still variable in certain
other qualities, which need to be the
