'As in‘ the case with the majority of

South .\‘orwnlk division emanated
from a small local company. In this
instance the original chucern was
knowuwas the Norwulk and Stamford
.'l‘elcphone--Gompuu_v, which was or-
ganized in 71878. shortly after the iirst
commercial telephone exchange had
been opened ianew‘l'iaven. it fur-
nished a very primitive mode of Her-
‘ vice. bctwedn’ Nprwallt, South Norwnilg;
Stamford and New Jannan, and was
owned by a number‘oi’ private individ-
uals ‘in St'nmi‘o‘ anti Norwnlk.
.l. K. Butler, who is at present a
district,superintendcut of the New
England,,fii‘eleplione and 'l'uleg'aph
Company in, New Hampshire, built. the
first switchboard, which was located in
a buildint; ,near the oite ot‘ the present
Lounsbury and Mathewson block in
South Main street, Soot Norwnlk,
and for a few years carried out the
duties or manager. Arno time in the
history of that company, which contin-
ued until lBSZ, did the, total number
orisuhs‘cribers reach over one hunv
tired. ‘ ,
in 1882. upon the organization of
the Southern New England Telephone
(.‘olnphny.’ the local company was sold
out to the new organization, and an
oilice opened in the Gazette buildimf,

chunge‘ remained in this building" until
.1895, and was then moved to the. set:-
ond floor or the Sentinel building, in

time two doors in the building were
taken, one being given over to the use

has been continued until the present.

When Mr. Butler resigned his posi-
tion asmauagcr of the division, he
was succeeded by E. A. Smith, now

who wns'i'ollmrcd in 1889 by ll. ll. Mix,
who is at present. a member of the
auditing force of the company. Mr.
Mix was succeeded by .l. B. Morris,
who is 1898 was followed by J. F.
Strong, at present connected with the
engineering department.

by Maurice F. Nutting, who had‘ been
up to that time connected with the
contract department, and is at the
present time in charge of the divis-
ion. '
