George Vnn Nostrand Served Many
Years on Long Island Railroad.
MERIDEN. Dec. 26.—-—George Van
Nostrand, formerly chief of police of
this cit y. died Thursday. after a month
of illness front Bright’s disease and
heart trouble. He was 66 yours old
and is survived by'a, widow.
Mr. Vim Nostrand wits born in
New York city, and lived there
several years, learning . the ship cur-
pcnter's trade. and later entering the.
railroad business, having served as
brakeman, haggagemaster and conduc-
1111' on the Long Island Railroad. In
1867, Mr Van Nostrand came to this
city. In that sam‘é year thé police force
was organised, he being the first pat-
rolman appointed He was promoted to
sergeant. caption. and chief in 1898
serving in that capacity until 1906
when he resigned to look after his per
sons] affairs.
