John Rowland, Jr., a hat manufac-
turer. died at the home of his sister-
in-,law Mrs Ralph W Rowland. in
Yonkers, N. Y. ,Sunday, of a complica-
tion of diseases. He was born in Yon:
here in 1861, and resided there the
greater part of his life.

It has been decided that the contest
for the state championship in trap
shooting which was IIot finished at the.
tournament In Danbury, JulI 18, shall
be completed at the tournament which
will be held in Bethe] under the sus-
pices oi’ the Bethel Gun Club, Aug-
ust. 29.
The season of the putty shooter has
arrived and numerous small boys are
going about the street with big balls of
putty and long tin tubes through which
to shoot little putty pills at their fel-
lows and other objects. The putty pills
are made as occasion requires from the
big ball. which is usually pressed
around the center of the tube for con-
venience In carrying.

Some time ago Miss Susie It. Nor
ton of Inkeville went to Can Turkey.
In Asia, as a missionary. Among her
effects was a phonograph, also a num-
ber of blank records." Her parents.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas 1.. Norton, also
have a machine and records at their
home. and by means of these machines
a. novel communication is carried
on.
The folks at home speak their mes-
sages into the machine equipped with
the blank record. and when It Is com-
pleted forward it. to their daughter in
the far—off country. In turn she makes
records in the saute manner, which
are sent home. Thus it is that they
are able to hear each cther‘s voices,
although thousands of miles of land
and water separate them
