Callahan. the last surviving promin-
ent leader in the notorious Breathitt
County lends, was so badly wounded

ently concerned in the series of bar-
qrcls between the Hargis iactiou and
othr factions in that region.
Callahan was stabbed and fatally
wounded yesterday in his store on
Longs Creek by his brother-In-law.
John Spiccr. Splcer In turn was shot
dead by Callahan's seventeen year old
son. Spicer and the elder Callahu
had been quarreling over a suit for di-
vorce which Callahan had begun some
months ago against his wife.
Callahan was known throughout the
iourteen years of loud complications
as the chief Lieutenant of Judge Jlm
Hargis, whose reign as a boss In
Breathitt County was so long maintain-
talned, and who died three ntonths
ago from a pistol shot fired by his own
son.
